STANLY COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Investigators in Stanly County say a teenager drowned after jumping from a bridge while swimming with friends on Sunday.

According to the Stanly County Sheriff's Office, 19-year-old Craig J. Vanderhall was swimming with friends at the Old Whitney train trestle at the end of Pump House Road on Sunday.

Witnesses said Vanderhall jumped from the trestle into the water and while swimming to the shore disappeared under the water.

WBTV has learned that several people made unsuccessful efforts to locate Vanderhall and called 911.

Several agencies, including fire, EMS, Stanly Rescue, and Sheriff's Deputies responded.

Vanderhall's body was recovered a short time later and transported to Stanly Regional Medical Center.
