Moped driver killed in Shelby wreck

SHELBY, NC (WBTV) - The east-bound side of Highway 74 was shut down Saturday night after to a fatal wreck between a moped and a passenger car. The Shelby Police Department responded to a traffic accident at the intersection of Hamrick Street and W. Dixon Boulevard around 10 p.m.

48-year-old Gregory Michael Nordone was driving a 2006 Mercedes traveling West on Dixon Boulevard when his vehicle collided with a moped in the intersection of Hamrick Street and Dixon Boulevard.  The operator of the moped was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the deceased has not been released due to family notification.

The accident is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to call the Shelby Police Department at (704) 484-6845 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 481-TIPS (8477).

WBTV spoke with the driver of the car. He said he was driving east on Highway 74, when the moped pulled out of a gas station and into the path of his vehicle. The driver says the moped rider first crossed into the west bound lane and then into the east bound lane.

The driver says he was traveling home to Charlotte, with his family. No one inside the car was hurt.

The driver is not facing any charges at this time.
