The search for baby Elaina Steinfurth started three months ago.
East Toledo woman Julie King said her son's girlfriend, Angela Steinfurth, called her June 1, asking if she and her two daughters could stay with King for the night. King said she allowed it, but didn't see 1-year-old Elaina at all the next day.
That was the day Elaina's father, TJ Steinfurth, arrived to pick his girls up. When Angela refused, the police were called. Angela eventually agreed to hand over the girls, but after going in King's home, came out and reported Elaina wasn't there.
Toledo Police said they questioned TJ, Angela, and Angela's boyfriend at the time, Steven King. They searched King's home and several others on Federal Street, looking for any sign of Elaina.
Four days later, crews began to search the Maumee River. Nothing was found.
A week after that, Toledo Police joined forces with the FBI and announced a $10,000 reward for information that would lead to the whereabouts of Elaina. Later that night, Angela was arrested for child endangering.
Several weeks and court appearances later, Angela was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury for obstruction of justice.
There were many false alarms in the case. On July 3, hair found in the Maumee River was confirmed to be human hair. Further test results confirmed it was not related the case.
On July 22, Steven King was arrested and charged with felony obstruction. During his arraignment Aug. 8, an assistant Lucas County prosecutor said the case was being investigated as a homicide.
On Sept. 5, a trial date was set for King. On that same day, police received new information about the case and executed a search warrant in the area of King's Federal Street residence.
The search turned up human remains, found in a box in a garage near the home. An autopsy has been set for Friday morning to determine who the remains belonged to.
