Romare Bearden Park opens to public on Friday

City and county officials will officially celebrate the completion of Romare Bearden Park on Friday.

Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation is holding a two day festival of events to celebrate the new Parisian-style park in uptown Charlotte.

The park is named for Romare Bearden, an African-American artist and writer who was born in Charlotte.

Located in Third Ward, the park is part of the area's rebirth.

"You can look around here and see what's grown since we started the park 2 years ago - a residential tower - knights baseball - these are economic engines as well as memory makers," said Jim Garges, Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation director.

The 5.4 acre park will include two large gardens, an event lawn and a child play area with cascading water.

The park will be one of two new attractions in the ward.

Just across the street, the Charlotte Knights are building their new stadium, BB&T Ballpark, slated to be completed next spring.

"When you have a great park like Romare Bearden right in the center of that heart - this is where it is really going to happen," Garges said.
