Union Co. school websites accidentally shut down by employee

UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Parents and students in Union County looking to find information on the school district website are having some issues. An error accidentally shut down the entire system last week.

The district said the mistake was made by a member of the Technology Services Department. Members of the department are working around the clock to fix the problem and restore functionality.

As many as 70,000 users typically visit the website on the first week of school.

One of them was Heidie Norris, who has a son starting kindergarten at Marshville Elementary School. She wanted to use the website to sign up for volunteer opportunities.

"Mistakes happen, be a little more careful next time," she said.  Other parents told WBTV they were surprised by the shutdown.

"We greatly regret the mistake that was made by a member of our team, especially as teachers and students are returning to school," said Tony Burrus, Chief Technology Officer. "Unfortunately mistakes happen. We are working to both correct the error and ensure that this cannot happen again."

As the department works to restore the full website, a temporary website is in place. Important links are being added as they become available.

"The school system website is a source of pride for our district. It has won state awards on a yearly basis," shared Chief Communications Officer Rob Jackson. "In rebuilding the website, the Communications Department will be working with Technology Services to recreate a useful, intuitive tool that serves our students, parents, and staff well."

Jackson said other methods of communication are being used, including social media, email, and the phone call system.
