All lanes back open on East Independence after deadly crash

All lanes of East Independence Boulevard are back open Friday morning after a deadly crash near Bojangles Coliseum.

WBTV was at the scene early Friday and saw damage to the windshield and roof of a 2007 Toyota Camry.

Police said the driver, 29-year-old Marcus Lofton, was traveling east on Independence "at a high rate of speed", when he hit a pedestrian who was walking along the road.

The pedestrian, 26-year-old Henry Williford Chism, was killed.

Investigators said Lofton continued driving for about a mile until he pulled off onto Briar Creek Road.

The crash was reported at 3:15 a.m.

Police said speed, alcohol, and drug use were all factors in the crash. Thursday was Lofton's birthday.

Lofton was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. He is charged with driving while impaired, involuntary manslaughter and possession of marijuana.

If you witnessed this crash, or know any information that could help investigators, please call Crime Stoppers at 704.334.1600 or Detective Steve Williams at 704.336.8862.
