A burglary ring is hitting strip malls

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A burglary ring is hitting strip malls and looking for safes to crack-- especially in North Charlotte.

For the second time in a month, a team of three men cut phone lines to prevent the burglar alarm from calling out. Then, they pry open back doors and once in, they look for a safe.

Surveillance video shows two men in light colored, hooded ponchos, sneaking into a business called Lucky Strikes on North Tryon.

They go straight to the from counter, looking for a safe.

You can see one of the men carrying a pry bar, a saw and a walkie-talkie.

"They had one guy outside kind of looking around, being a spotter and two guys came inside, they broke open the safe and stole money," said Detective Marty Cuthbertson.

During the burglary, one of the men makes a mistake, looking up to show his face to the surveillance camera.

Police have compared his picture to a break-in a month earlier and about a mile away on Sugar Creek.

"To me, in looking at both cases, both incidences, the one on Sugar Creek and the one here, it's the same people."

If you know who these men are, call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600. There is reward money up to $1,000.00 available and you won't have to leave your name.
