CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

State investigators say a former paramedic with Union County Emergency Medical Service stole medications intended for patients.

A spokesperson for the State Bureau of Investigations says the SBI Diversion and Environmental Crimes Unit arrested 45 year old Joey Reed Dahl,  and charged him with four felony counts of Embezzlement of a Controlled Substance by Employee.

According to the SBI, Dahl was employed by the Carolina Health Care System and was assigned to the Union County Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Unit as a Paramedic.

Investigators say that while on duty, Dahl would allegedly self-medicate with injectable controlled substances that were intended for patient care and then refill the vials with saline solution to avoid detection.

The SBI says Dahl resigned from the hospital and surrendered his paramedic certification.
