STALLINGS, NC (WBTV) -

Police in Stallings are investigating after a town commissioner was found dead in a backyard pool.

According to the Stallings Police Department, officers were called to a home in the Country Woods East neighborhood around 8 p.m. Sunday night.

When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as 54-year-old Harry A. Stokes, in the pool behind the home.

Officers pulled Stokes from the pool and began resuscitation efforts. Shortly after their arrival, Stokes was pronounced deceased.

"He was a Councilmember for nearly 4 years and a longtime resident of Union County. We are deeply saddened by the loss of Harry," a release from the Town of Stallings stated Monday.

The release went on to state, "The Town is a better place because of his contribution to this community. He will be missed as a husband, father, friend and community leader. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time."
