It's almost here, the first week of High School football in 2013. With many of our teams being battle tested right out of the gate ... It wasn't easy deciding on WBTV's first Game of the Week.
It was also hard to deny what's being tabbed by fans, and even wonders head coach Mike Newsome as the "Daytona 500" of high school football. Also known as the "battle of the bell" game, Concord Spiders vs. A. L. Brown Wonders.
This game in the past, has been played as the season finale, and often for the south piedmont conference title. New this season, realignment has moved A. L. Brown into 4A, so the game is now a non-conference game, as Concord remains a 3A school.
This won't stop thousands of fans from packing into K-town's stadium for the longest running rivalry in the state of North Carolina.
Coached by Glen Padgett, the spiders will look to keep the bell this season. The 3A state championship runner up will have a new man under center, as B. J. Beecher graduated and is attending East Carolina. Graham Pruitt is now a senior, he does have experience at quarterback, substituting when Beecher was injured last season. Running back Rocky Reid also returns to the Spiders this season. On Defense, look for the reigning defensive conference player of the year, Jerry Burk to make an impact again at Linebacker.
The Wonders will have quarterback Andrew Ramirez returning, and Johnny Delahoussaey. Delahoussaey will be one to watch, a 2-way player at defensive tackle and Wide Receiver. The team is also happy to have center, Kaleb Spry return. Spry knows all the position on the offensive line, and will be the glue holding it all together.
