ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) -

A Rock Hill man is behind bars after police say he held his mother hostage in her own apartment at gunpoint while demanding powerful prescription drugs.

Rock Hill Police say 32-year-old Joshua Eddelman came to his mother's apartment on Hearn Street on Tuesday morning and violently demanded her to hand over prescription drugs while pointing a gun at her.

"He wanted her to give him the rest of her oxycodone. She said 'no, I'm not going to give you anymore of my oxycodone' and he threatened to kill her," said Rock Hill Police Department Public Information Officer Capt. Mark Bollinger.

Police say that's when Eddelman threw an unknown object at his mother, striking her in the back of the head.

Eddelman held his mom captive in her apartment for an hour until her neighbor, Dessie Brock, helped her escape by calling police after hearing the commotion.

"It's been going on for a while and it just finally came to the head. She's (the mother) dusting herself off and doing good today," said Brock.

WBTV stopped by the woman's apartment on Wednesday for a comment, but no one was home.

Police say Eddelman has a history with prescription drug abuse.

This is just one of many cases Capt. Bollinger and his men are seeing more of - people getting hooked on other's prescription drugs, such as oxycodone.

"If people have extra pills around their houses that they don't need anymore we always encourage people to bring the drugs to one of our drug drop off boxes," said Capt. Bollinger.

Brock hopes Eddelman can put this chapter of his life behind him.

"He's a good person and he's made his mistakes. I just hope he gets the help he needs and maybe when he comes back he'll be a better person," she said.

Eddelman faces kidnapping, aggravated assault and drug trafficking charges.

He is currently being held on $70,000 bond at the York County Detention Center.
