"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
If you're a Mecklenburg County property owner, you may have been shocked when you received your county tax bill a couple of years ago.
For many residents, the bill skyrocketed by hundreds – even thousands – of dollars over the previous year, thanks to a new revaluation done by the county.
Once you got over your shock you may have thought, "Well, this just can't be right."
Well, as it turns out, it wasn't.
Many, many parcels of land had been assessed incorrectly…some undervalued but most were overvalued.
As taxpayers, you decided not to take it lying down.
You Spoke Out, so strongly and clearly that your voices were heard not only locally, but all the way to Raleigh.
Which leads us to July 26th.
Governor Pat McCrory went to Cornelius to sign into law Senate Bill 159, which requires the property revaluations of 2011 to be redone.
Furthermore, those who were overcharged will be refunded the difference with a 5% interest rate.
There is a lesson for us all to learn here…as citizens, you did not blindly accept the hand that was dealt to you.
You thought it was wrong, and you let your concerns be heard.
And in the end, your diligence and determination paid off.
The will of the people won out…Congratulations.
