Travel expert's recommendations for summer vacation tech

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - With just a couple of weeks left before the start of a new school year, families may be squeezing in one last vacation.

Travel technology expert April Mayrath stopped by WBTV News Sunday Morning to share her favorite apps and gadgets for summer vacation.

They are listed below and described in her own words:

FreedomPop (free)

FreedomPop is a cool new company that gives you free Internet through different devices. My favorite for summer travel gadget is this Overdrive Pro hotspot – it's a portable hotspot that fits in your pocket or purse, and it gives you 500MB of free Internet access each month! This is perfect if you're on the go, and you want to upload those photos of the kids at Disneyland to Facebook , or you want to send a quick email to your colleague at work – without having to pay for pricey (and sometimes unreliable) hotel or Airport Wi-Fi. Plus, you can connect up to 5 devices on it!

Gogobot (free)

Gogobot is a free app that has been dubbed "the Facebook of travel."  It allows you to research any location by getting advice from friends while letting you plan where to go, book hotels, make restaurant reservations and share your travels experiences and recommendations.

ChicBuds "Porta Party" Bluetooth Speakers ($50)

ChicBuds is a neat new company that makes stylish headphones, earbuds and portable speakers. This is what is cleverly called a "Porta Party" Bluetooth speaker! They are wireless, so you can take them anywhere with you, and use it for music stored or streamed on your phone or your iPod, and it has 10 hours of play time. So, when want some tunes while you're sunbathing on the beach, this is a perfect – they put out an impressive amount of sound! And of course, what I like best is that they come in these really unique prints.

Mophie Juice Pack Reserve ($30)

How inconvenient is it when you run out of battery life on your favorite gadget while traveling? This Mophie portable battery pack plugs right into your iPhone or iPod to give it that extra charge it needs while you're on the go. It's also small, and affordable!

HotelTonight (free)

So, you're traveling, but you haven't quite planned out every detail, such as where you're going to stay! HotelTonight is a free app that lets you secure pretty incredible deals on last-minute hotel bookings. You can sort by area and get rock-bottom prices for rooms that these hotels are trying to fill for the night.
