Neighbors: Dog woke couple as fire tore through home

A south Charlotte home was heavily damaged by flames early Tuesday morning.

Neighbors say they heard explosions just prior to seeing the flames.

"We heard a loud bang," said Sheila Newcomer who lives in the house near where the fire broke out.  "It looked like there was an explosion coming from the garage area."

Charlotte firefighters arrived at the scene on Covey Chase Drive in south Charlotte at about 1 a.m. to find flames shooting from the windows, roof, and garage.

Emergency crews quickly laid hose lines in an effort to knock down the blaze.

But the main concern: the couple inside the home.

The couple was able to escape. Firefighters said the husband and wife woke up, smelled smoke, and ran out.

Neighbors told WBTV the family dog actually woke up the couple, and all got out OK.

As for the explosions people in the area heard, speculation amongst neighbors is they were from the propane tanks the homeowner was known to keep in the garage.

While the cause of the fire is under investigation, there was a power outage along the street just before the first pop was heard.

"The power came on about 15 minutes later, and that's when we heard the booms," said Newcomer.

The Red Cross responded to the fire as well and provided food on scene to the family.
