Belmont approves moving war memorial to city park

BELMONT, NC (WBTV) - A World War II memorial will be relocated after more than six decades at its current home.

Belmont's "Fighting Yank" statue has been located in front of Belmont Middle School since the 1960's, when the building was used as a high school.

Art Shoemaker tells WTBV it is time to move the statue to a better location. He asked city council members to consider moving the monument to Stowe Park in the Belmont's downtown area.

"If they put it here in a park like setting, with a pavilion and walkway and a historical look, I am sure people will once again notice the statue and look at the statue," Shoemaker said.

Councilwoman Martha Stowe is against moving the monument. She tells WBTV Shoemaker has good intentions, but moving the statue would make it a more likely target for vandals. "The park has had far more vandalism than the school," Shoemaker said.

Belmont City Council voted on and approved the proposal Monday night.

The total cost of the project would be approximately $10,000 to $15,000.  It is not clear who would fit that bill.
