CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 5% of the nations truck drivers are women. And there is a massive shortage of drivers period. There are hundreds of thousands of positions available but not enough qualified drivers to fill them.
Don Crisp from the Charlotte Truck Driver Training School says he believes the industry needs more women to help fill the shortage of drivers.
He said some women may shy away from the male dominated industry and there's no reason they should. He said he could teach anyone just the basics of a big rig, in an hour. We offered up WBTV intern Michelle Burroughs to try the task.
