New treatment for problem many men find embarrassing

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

It isn't an easy thing for men to talk about. The thing that keeps some of them from taking their shirts off at the beach, and from buying the clothes they want at the store, is called male pseudogynecomastia.

It is a condition sometimes brought on by obesity and sometimes by genetics. It causes men to have larger breasts than other men.

It doesn't help that it is the source of many jokes.

For Andrew Bailes it has always been an obstacle in his life.

"Ever since I was little I have always felt self-conscious. It affects the clothes you buy and the things you can do," Bailes said.

He was one of about 15 men in our area to participate in a study at Dermatology, Laser, and Vein Specialists of the Carolinas. Dr. Gilly Munavalli is using Cool Sculpting, a technique typically used to reduce "love handles", to reduce the size of men's breasts.

It freezes the fat tissue, effectively killing it, and is non-invasive like the traditional and effective liposuction has been.

"There are no needles, no numbing, and the rate of complication is very minimal," Munavalli said.

"It just gives me a whole lot more confidence, I smile more. I am happier knowing that if a situation comes up and I have to take my shirt off its not a big deal anymore," Bailes said.

WBTV spoke to another man who participated in the same study. He wanted to keep his identity a secret but said he only saw a small result.

"It wasn't a huge difference for me but I can see how it would be," the man said.

Dr. Munavalli indicated most of the patients he has treated with this off-label procedure did experience some improvement.

The right candidate is someone in shape or only slightly overweight because those with too high a Body Mass Index might not see a difference. It costs six to eight hundred dollars per side, per treatment, and these men had two treatments each.
