Rain slows some repairs in flood damaged areas

CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

Heavy rain moved through Hickory and parts of Catawba County on Wednesday.

The storms did not linger long, but put down enough rain to slow the work at a few places hit hard by flooding on Saturday.

Crews at Catawba Valley Community College took a break while heavy rain pounded a sinkhole site there.

Classes begin in just over two weeks and officials want the problem isolated and fixed. Near the Humane Society, a sinkhole that developed in a roadway had already been dug out, and a rusted drain line replaced by the time the heavy rain hit.

Still, crews had to wait for the runoff to subside before continuing the work.

At the Highway 10 bridge in Newton, crews kept working to rebuild the roadway on both sides of the bridge but one worker said it could be a week or longer before the road opens up again.

Officials are targeting major roads or problems that affect the most people first.

It's why washouts that have closed roads like Grace Church Road in Vale have not been touched by repair crews.

Officials say it will be hard to predict when all the problem spots in the county will be repaired.

Weather will play a role in how quickly everything gets done.

They are asking the public to be patient.
