TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Police say they've seen a dip in violent crime this year, compared to this time last year.

The numbers include five fewer homicides this year, 35 fewer shootings, and 105 fewer robberies. Police say their work on the street and in the department is helping make that difference.

"One thing that I'd really like to get out is that in Toledo, Ohio your odds of being a random victim of violence are really low," said TPD Sgt. Joe Heffernan. "We don't have that much violent crime compared to other metropolitan areas our size."

Police say a multi-pronged approach to police work is helping reduce the numbers. That includes the sky cop cameras, more feet on the ground, and community outreach programs that pair officers up with youth, like T-CIRV and the police probation team. The public is also helping.

"[From] the time we put charges on someone [to] the time we're arresting them has gone down. I think a lot of that is because of the social media presence that we have out there now," Heffernan said. "A lot of people are tune in to our Facebook and Twitter, and again, we have a lot of community involvement."

Police say with continued support from the community and proactive steps on the department's part, Toledo can expect to see those numbers continue to drop.
