CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Derrick Bennett is hard at work cutting hair. The owner of this Headlines Barbershop in Charlotte has been in business since 2008 thanks to many loyal customers.

But opening up shop this month means much more than just fresh cuts and making profits.

"From my understanding it's close to 200,000 people in our surrounding areas in poverty," said Derrick.

A new Gallup poll shows that more than 30 % of single-parent households struggle to feed their families.

19% of two-parent households reported similar difficulties.

These statistics motivated Derrick to get involved.

"I've been hearing about Second Harvest Food Bank for a while," said Derrick.

The local barber is asking his customers to drop off non-perishable items for the next 30 days.

"This food is actually going to go into someone's stomach who maybe a few days before didn't know where their next meal was going to come from," said customer Corey Dargan.

The bins are slowly getting full thanks to people like Corey.

"I stopped by Wal-Mart and loaded up on some things to bring here. When I come back next week I'll be bringing some more stuff."

If you'd like to help, you can drop off non-perishable food items at Headlines Barbershop, 5309 East Independence Boulevard.

You can also donate cash directly to Second Harvest Food Bank on the nonprofit's website.
