STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) -

A Statesville man who is accused of hitting a woman with his car on Friday night is now in police custody.

The Statesville Police Department says they arrested Richard Turner, 55, Sunday evening at his residence on North Tradd Street.

Turner is being charged with felony hit and run, as well as assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, after he allegedly attacked a married couple.

Officers say they responded to a hit and run call on Garfield Street around 7:30 p.m.

When they arrived, they learned that the couple was taking a stroll when a man hit the woman with his green Kia.

They say the driver then got out of the car and began chasing the woman's husband, threatening the man with knife in hand.

The incident may have escalated if it wasn't for a group of young men playing basketball nearby, who rushed to the couple's aid when they saw what was happening.

Investigators say the attacker returned to his car and fled, traveling East on Garfield Street.

The woman was taken to a local hospital and was later released.

The couple told police the driver was Richard Turner, saying that Turner had once been in a relationship with the woman.

Turner is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center without bond.
