Local 8-year-old softball stars headed to World Series

LINCOLN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The Boger City All-Stars is a team made up of 8 and 9-year-old girls that have been playing ball together for at least 5 years.

"Ever since they were in T-ball and I knew they were a special group then," said Head Coach Shane Huss.

Two weeks ago, the girls fought a tough battle in Lillington, NC and came home with the 8U State Championship in Softball. Next week, they are headed for the biggest game of their lives.

"We're going to Alexandria Louisiana to play in the 2013 World Series of Softball." Huss said.

The girls are tough as nails on the diamond, each one responding quickly to base calls as their coach bats fielders at random. They have 3 more practices left before they head to the big game, but their focus is not just on getting better. They're also trying to get enough money to get them there.

Huss says the entire trip will cost around $12,000 for busses to make the 14 hour trip to Louisiana and hotel rooms for the team and coaches. The team spent most of the money they raised with local fund-raisers on their trip to state.

They're working on other ways to make money and more fund-raisers over the next week. They're also relying on donations and sponsors to help make the ends meet.
