CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Drivers tried to dodge a vehicle that went out of control with no one behind the wheel along I-77 late Wednesday night.

It started with a rear-end collision between two sedans near the exit ramp from the freeway to Remount Road.

State Highway Patrol Troopers said when the driver of the second car jumped out to help the people who were trapped in the other vehicle he just struck, the car slipped out of gear, and went rolling onto the interstate.

That's when two other accidents happened.

Firefighters and Medics raced to the scene, as Charlotte-Mecklenburg police closed down the northbound lanes of the freeway for a half an hour.

Three people in all were transported to the hospital, but officials on the scene said they should be okay.

The series of accidents was cleared up in just over an hour.  No word on what caused the original collision, or if any charges are pending.
