SCDOT crews will be closing two of the four lanes of Interstate 77 southbound over the Catawba River bridge at 4 p.m. Wednesday due to deck failure, the department says.
The lanes from be closed from Exit 83 to Exit 82 A&B until Monday July 29th.
SCDOT Assistant Maintenance Supervisor Perry Crocker says a hole about the size of a coffee can has formed in lane three across the bridge on the southbound side. You can look through the hole and see the river below.
Crocker said there are several smaller holes around the big one but not all the way through the roadway. Crews will fix those as well, he said.
The bridge was built in the late 1970s and is reaching the end of its expected life span, Crocker said.
Congestion can be expected and anyone who can take an alternate route home is advised to do so.
