Police: Charlotte firefighter assaulted girlfriend, killed kitten

Posted: Updated:

A Charlotte firefighter is off the job for now, while under investigation for assaulting his girlfriend and killing a kitten, according to Gaston County Police.

Bryan Barfield is being held in county jail on five charges including assault by strangulation, which is a felony, and cruelty to animals. Records show Barfield was booked on the charges around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Monday, Barfield appeared in court. WBTV's Brody O'Connell was there and said the alleged victim, Barfield's girlfriend, asked for Barfield's release. His bond was set at $10,000.

During Monday's court appearance, police said Barfield assaulted his girlfriend, who he lives with. Their child was there at the time. Police also said Barfield beat the family cat to death by kicking and throwing it.

The official report states that the 14-week-old kitten was thrown into a toilet.

"During the investigation, officers learned that cat had been kicked, thrown around the house, inside and outside, and at one point was thrown into a toilet," said Captain Steve Jentsch, Gaston County Police.

The Charlotte Fire Department said Barfield is on administrative duty pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.

"As the investigation is ongoing, I am unable to comment on the details of this case," said Charlotte Fire Chief Jon Hannan. "However, I want our citizens' to know we hold our firefighters to a high standard of conduct in order to maintain the trust and respect of our community."

Barfield was hired by the department on October 31, 2011.
