Shopping center makeover frustrates customers

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Many customers seem to like the new look of the oldest shopping center in Charlotte. "I think it looks really nice, it's really improved it a lot," said one customer from the parking lot of the Park Road Shopping Center.

Construction started in April to give a facelift to the center which was established in 1956. A wood paneling design covers the front face of the buildings there with a white-wash added to the brick accents.

The new façade seems to be a hit with most shoppers. But some seem frustrated with the construction that's turned the parking lot into a detour zone.

"It's a big inconvenience to people that use the shopping center," said one man.

Right now, several stores are surrounded by fencing. Fuel Pizza for example.

One customer told us, "It is a maze trying to get in here. And trying to find a parking space can be discouraging."

Business is usually booming at Fuel Pizza around noon. But Wednesday, Only a handful of people found their way in.

While the makeover is underway, cars also have to follow a maze of detours. Some parts of the parking lot are closed off completely. Others have been re-designed.

Owners of the shopping center say, construction has been delayed by the recent rains. They say the whole project will hopefully be done by the end of August. In the meantime they suggest shoppers follow the signs.
