Police looking for attempted carjacker

LANCASTER COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -

The Lancaster Police Department is looking for a man wanted in an attempted carjacking over the weekend.

On Saturday, July 13, just after 3 a.m., officers responded to the parking lot of North Main Citgo on N. Main Street in reference to a reported armed robbery attempt.

The victim told the officers that while pumping gas, a man approached him and asked if he could look at the wheels on his car. He told the man that he could, and the man acted as if he was checking them out.

The man then produced a handgun, placing it against the victims' neck. The victim began resisting, and the two wrestled across the parking lot and over a hill at the end of the parking lot. A second suspect followed the two over the hill, police said.

The men eventually withdrew from the victim, getting into a burgundy ford explorer and leaving the area. The victim sustained some minor bruises and lacerations from the struggle.

The Lancaster Police Department has obtained arrest warrants on Donald Joseph Wheeler, III, for the offenses of attempted carjacking and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Wheeler is described as a 27-year-old white male, 5'11", 230 pounds, with a medium build and brown hair.

Anyone that may know the whereabouts of Wheeler is asked to contact the Lancaster Police Department at (803) 283-1173 or The Anonymous Tip Line at (803) 289-6040.
