Driver charged with DWI after rear-ending two other vehicles, one critically injured

Police have charged a man with driving while intoxicated after he rear-ended two other vehicles, sending one of the drivers to the hospital in life-threatening condition.

The crash was reported at 12:54 a.m. on the 15400 block of Johnston Road, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police say 31-year-old Nicholas Michael Borden was speeding down Johnston Road in his 2007 BMW when he rear-ended a 2005 Nissan Maxima driven by 31-year-old Hannie Jordan Welcher Jr.

Borden hit the back of Welcher's car in the right lane.

He then got into the left lane where he rear-ended a 2011 Toyota RAV4 driven by 37-year-old William Aaron Morrison.

Borden's BMW caught fire when it crashed. Emergency crews had to pull him out of the vehicle when they arrived on scene.

Morrison was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Borden was taken to hospital as well with non-life threatening injuries, according to the crash report.

Borden is charged with driving while intoxicated.

Police say additional charges are pending against Borden.

Speed and alcohol are factors in the crash.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police at 704-432-2169.
