Driver flees after crashing into house, power pole overnight

It was sight no one was expecting to see - an SUV buried deep into the side of an east Charlotte home.  But what happened next, took everyone by surprise.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said around 1:00 am Monday, a driver behind the wheel of a newer model Kia SUV, lost control along Amity Place, and slammed into a power pole, cutting it in half.

The truck then veered left, and careened into the side of a house.

Police said the house was vacant at the time, so no one was hurt.

Sharon Knight lives across the street and said the noise made her jump out of bed."I was just up watching TV and I heard loud screeching noises, then a crash," she said.

Knight told WBTV the driver threw the truck in reverse, and backed out of the gaping hole left in the home. She said he ran away on foot and her husband tried to follow in his car.

Knight said her husband was unable to track him down.

Power initially wasn't disrupted because of the accident, but utility workers had to turn off the electricity to the neighborhood to replace the shattered pole and the damaged transformer.

Power was restored shortly thereafter.
