Investigators: Driver tried to outrun train before collision on tracks

Posted: Updated:

An Amtrak train carrying 250 passengers collided with a Lexus sedan early Wednesday morning in Gaston County.

It happened on J E Herndon Access Road, off Cleveland Avenue. No one was injured in the crash.

The train is the Amtrak Crescent No. 19 heading from New York to New Orleans. The train has resumed its trip and is running about 3 hours behind schedule.

Officials are still investigating, but said the crash caused so much damage that the first engine from the train will be taken out of service.

Authorities say it looks like the driver of the Lexus was most likely trying to outrun the train.

The driver will most likely be charged later today. Authorities do not believe alcohol played a role.

Traffic was closed for several hours.

All lanes and tracks opened up around 6:30 a.m.
