People warned to stay away from dams

LOOKOUT SHOALS LAKE, NC (WBTV) -

All of the rain so far is keeping lake levels high and that has Duke Energy concerned about safety.

Teng Vang spent the day fishing with his family out at Lookout Shoals Dam.

Vang says the swift waters are ripe for fishing. It has also become a sight to see.

Guy Dobbs stopped by with his camera.

"This is the worst I've ever seen it," said Dobbs.

As of Tuesday,  water levels were about 2 ½ feet higher than normal because of the recent storms.

Duke energy continues to move water downstream to make room for more rain.

But lake officials are concerned people getting near the water could be putting themselves in danger.

"The water just above and just below our spillways and dams are especially treacherous right now and so it's important for people to stay away from that," said Lisa Hoffman, a spokesperson with Duke Energy.

Hoffmann says the water can pull boaters and swimmers in towards the dam. She says it's important to wear life jackets and be aware of possible floating debris.

Vang says he understands the warning so he's extra cautious, but today he just couldn't resist.

"I'm off of work so I had nothing to do, so I might as well come here with my son and do a little fishing," said Vang.
