COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been named to the watch lists for the Maxwell and Bednarik awards.

The Maxwell Award is given to college football's best player while the Bednarik Award goes to the game's top defensive player.

Clowney is the 6-foot-6, 274-pound junior who was a unanimous All-American selection last season.

He was also the Southeastern Conference's defensive player of the year and finished sixth in voting for the Heisman Trophy.

Clowney was a finalist for the Bednarik Award last year, finishing behind Notre Dame linebacker Manti T'eo.

Semifinalists for this year's awards will be announced October 29th and the winners will be named December 12th.
