PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office launched a nearly 24-hour "doghunt" Saturday to find one of its narcotics detection K9 officers that escaped from his handler on Saturday.

"Sham" managed to get out of a deputy's backyard in the area of Sossaman and Baseline on Saturday at about 10:45 p.m., MCSO said in a statement.

Spokesman Joaquin Enriquez said the dog has escaped before but has always come back quickly. When he did not return home by Sunday afternoon, the sheriff's office alerted the media to enlist the public's help in finding the dog.

Sham was located Sunday evening just before 7 p.m. and returned to his handler. The circumstances of his return were not immediately available.
