WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Several candidates didn't waste any time filing for the upcoming 2013 municipal elections.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo was among one of the first to file, hoping to keep his current position in local government.  He said there are a lot of projects in the city he would like to see finished.

Saffo has been under pressure from his party to seek a state elected position, but the Wilmington mayor said he makes his decisions based on what he can accomplish for the citizens and who he can work with.

Saffo said right now he has a good working relationship with council members in Wilmington and commissioners in New Hanover County.

Carolina Beach Bob Lewis also filed Friday, hoping to be elected to keep his position in Pleasure Island. Town council appointed Lewis as mayor after Ray Rothrock resigned from the position last November.

Lewis added that he too would like to complete a couple more projects before ending his time in public service.

Skip Watkins, who oversees the Cape Fear Fair and Expo, will try his hand in politics. He filed for a seat on Wilmington's City Council Friday as well.
