CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

After a 45 minute rain delay, 4th of July fireworks lit up the sky over Memorial Stadium in Charlotte.

The show was scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. The first fireworks hit the sky shortly after 10:15 p.m.

There were some who did not stick around for the start, but Jordan Fancher wouldn't miss it for the world.

"This is my first full event with my children. They have never been here before so I'm really excited," Fancher said.

Antonio Smalls traveled two hours to watch the fireworks with his family.

"We want to enjoy the experience and tap it into our memory banks that this is something that we did on the 4th of July. And we want to keep coming back," Smalls told WBTV.

Police estimate there were close to 5,000 people at Memorial stadium.
