Troopers say a deadly wreck Friday morning in Gaston County happened when a '91 Mercury tried to merge onto I-85 North and a teen driver hydroplaned in front of a tractor-trailer.
Investigators say the impact, which happened around 9:23 a.m., pushed the car approximately 100 feet to the median and the tractor-trailer rolled onto its side. The scene ended between exit 8 and exit 10.
Lem Lynch Photography was at the scene and said the tractor-trailer was overturned, and the car had heavy damage.
Eighteen-year-old driver, Benjamin Oakley, of Moncure, was killed in the crash.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center, but is expected to be OK. The driver will not face charges.
The Gastonia Fire Department's Hazardous Materials team was called to unload the diesel fuel from the tractor trailer.
As of 1:50 p.m., one lane was blocked on US 74 Eastbound near I-85. Crews are working to unload the tractor trailer, which was carrying frozen chickens.
North Carolina DOT estimates the lane will be blocked until 2:30 p.m. Friday.
