LAKE WYLIE, NC (WBTV) -

More than a dozen people had to be rescued from a popular sandbar on Lake Wylie after a strong storm moved through the area on Thursday.

The incident was reported just after 4 p.m. on Girl Scout Road along the lake, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Fire officials say Charlotte Fire Boat 38 was on patrol in the northern part of Lake Wylie when it arrived on scene at the popular sand bar just before as severe thunderstorm came through the region.

"Numerous swimmers were in distress and the crew of four firefighters quickly rescued eight adults from dangerous conditions," Charlotte Fire officials said.

Additional resources from Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department Lake Patrol, NC Department of National Resources, and New Hope Fire Department arrived to support rescue operations.

At least 18 people, total, were removed from the dangerous conditions and taken to nearby Buster Boyd Bridge landing for medical evaluation and treatment.
