SCOTTSDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A dangerous situation was diverted by police who caught an allegedly drunk man driving a stolen forklift in Scottsdale.

The Scottsdale Police Department said an officer on patrol in the 4400 block of Scottsdale Road noticed a forklift driving south on Scottsdale Road about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The officer pulled the driver over on Stetson Drive, west of Scottsdale Road.

The officer said the driver, Derek C. Jackson, 33, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Jackson told the officer he was on his way home from a party but did not explain why he was driving the forklift down Scottsdale Road.

Police say the forklift, owned by United Rentals, belonged at Fashion Square Mall for a construction project.

United Rentals confirmed with police that Jackson had no connection with the company or construction project.

Jackson was arrested for theft and DUI related charges.
