An Arizona man is in custody in California after being arrested in his girlfriend's death, which was initially considered an accidental drowning but later classified as a homicide.
According to the Mohave County Sheriff's Office, 54-year-old Louis Hugh Plunkett Jr. is being held by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department pending extradition to Arizona.
He was arrested on Interstate 40 outside Needles on Tuesday following a brief chase across the Colorado River from Arizona.
Mohave County sheriff's detectives had sought to arrest Plunkett in the June 26 death of 62-yeard-old Susan Burdick in a backyard swimming pool.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Trish Carter says the case became a homicide investigation after Plunkett's description of Burdick's death didn't match forensic evidence and autopsy results.
