UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A five-year-old girl was taken to the hospital after being hit by a bullet fragment, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.

The incident happened Monday night at a Wingate home on Old Monroe-Marshville Road.

Deputies told WBTV that a family member was shooting turtles in a pond near the house when a bullet fragment ricocheted, hitting the girl while she was playing on the back porch.

The girl was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, and is expected to be okay.

Officials say they are still investigating the incident, but that it does not appear to be intentional.
