Charleston ranked top U.S. travel destination

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

After making Travel and Leisure magazine's list of "snobbiest cities," the magazine announced that Charleston has been voted the top U.S. travel destination.

Travel and Leisure's features director Nilou Motamed announced on the TODAY show that Charleston was voted top city in the U.S. and Canada in Travel and Leisure 2013 World's Best Awards.

According to the magazine, this marks the third consecutive year that Charleston has been named the top U.S. trael destination by a national magazine.

Charleston has previously earned the top spot in 2011 and 2012 with Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards.

"Visiting the Charleston area is a unique experience for many reasons," says Frank Fredericks, Managing Director of Wild Dunes Resort and Chair of the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Board of Governors. In addition to the No. 1 City in the U.S. and Canada ranking, the following six Charleston area hotels received 2013 World's Best Awards.

To celebrate the Charleston's area win, the Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is launching #TakeMeToChs, a year-long sweepstakes that awards trips to the destination with accommodations provided by the six Charleston area hotels, inns, and resorts that appear on the Travel + Leisure 2013 World's Best Awards.

    Crews are searching for a man in a possible drowning in Lake Wylie Sunday. Officials say they received the call at 2:16 a.m. An initial investigation revealed that four people were on a boat in the lake at a sandbar located in the 9000 block of Nine Eagles Lane when the man either jumped or fell into the water.
