Thursday, July 11: Give A Pint, Get A Pint

WBTV is partnering with the American Red Cross for the "Give A Pint, Get A Pint" Blood Drive!

On July 11, 2013, presenting blood and platelet donors will be treated to Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream at several Charlotte-area Red Cross blood donation locations and will receive a coupon for a FREE pint. Participants will also receive a FREE T-shirt and be entered to win a trip to Hollywood!

The summer is typically one of the most challenging times of the year for blood donations. Vacations and sunny weather can keep many donors away from blood drives, yet countless numbers of patients depend on blood every day for survival.  Busy summer schedules mean that blood collections often drop significantly, leaving the blood supply vulnerable to a shortage that could affect local patients.

People can donate at any of the following locations:

"Ben & Jerry's is proud to continue our long standing partnership with the American Red Cross and WBTV, and this is a great way to not only give back to our community, but also give blood donors some enjoyment with our delicious ice cream," said Charles Durham, Owner and Operator of several Charlotte-area Ben & Jerry's stores.  "The Red Cross has a tremendous history of helping people locally and all over the world.  What better way to work together than by hosting the ‘Give a Pint, Get a Pint' blood drive at such a critical time of year, when donations are typically low during the summer."

"WBTV is honored to be able to partner with Ben & Jerry's and the American Red Cross on this vital blood drive," said WBTV General Manager Nick Simonette.  "Each year during the summer months we are faced with a shortage of blood.  We want to do everything in our power to prevent that from happening this year.  So, please come out, give blood and show your support for your friends and neighbors."

The Red Cross Carolinas Blood Services Region provides lifesaving blood to 103 hospitals and must have 1,600 people give blood and platelets each weekday to meet hospital demand.  Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day.  There is no substitute for blood and volunteer donors are the only source.

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days.  Platelets can be safely given every two weeks, up to 24 times a year. Most healthy people age 17 and older, 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood and platelets.  Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.
