Severe weather sweeps across WBTV viewing area

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Even though the nearest cold front is still very far away (in the Ohio River Valley) upper level disturbances well to our west have set off a chain reaction through the Carolinas.

Once one line formed, the outflow boundary from that initiated another line of storms. This ripple effect was just beginning to die down around 8 p.m. Lack of heating from the sun is prohibiting new development, and the main line is rapidly weakening.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect for both Burke and Catawba counties, where strong downburst winds toppled trees. Large hail was also reported in the area.

Things may be winding down tonight, but we could see a repeat on Thursday.
