CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte native made history Tuesday night, graduating as the first mentally challenged man from CMPD's Citizen's Academy.
Bobby Rose has wanted to be a police officer since he was five years old. The CMPD Citizen's Academy gives everyday citizens a chance to go behind the scenes with CMPD. Bobby told us the best part was riding along in a patrol car during a traffic stop.
"I want to thank CMPD for this experience," he said.
His 90-year old mother came up from Florida to be there for her son. She said this fulfills a dream 60 years in the making.
"The walkway for the school was next to our house and the kids used to ride bicycles fast and he'd go after them and give tickets and the kids used to play with him and they knew he was having fun and they went along with it," said mother Phyllis Apple.
CMPD says it was proud to have him, his sister Susan and wife Carolyn at Tuesday's graduation.
