Train slams into car in Conover, driver critically hurt

A driver crossing the railroad tracks at the entrance to the Southern Furniture Plant in Conover is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after a train hit his car broadside at the crossing.

Authorities are still trying to determine why the driver stopped the car on the tracks.

The impact crushed the passenger side of the car and pushed the vehicle more than 700 feet down the tracks.

While there are no flashing lights or crossing arms, the crossing is clearly marked with warning signs. "I guess he wasn't paying attention," said one neighbor.

It is the second time in as many weeks that a car was hit at the same intersection. Neighbors say that is unusual because it has been years, they said, since it happened before.

"When you approach a crossing that doesn't have stop arms, you need to stop, look and listen," said Conover Police Chief Steve Brewer.

The name of the driver has not been released.
