Man shot during drive-by in troubled Hidden Valley Neighborhood

Medics rushed a man to the hospital with a wound to the stomach after he says he was hit by gunfire from a passing truck.

The call came out around 11:30 Wednesday night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrived on the scene on Regan Road and Tom Hunter Road in northeast Charlotte to find the victim collapsed in front of a motel.

The CMPD says the unnamed man was walking down the road, when a black SUV pulled up along side of him.

At least one of the occupants inside leveled a gun out the window, and opened fire.

The victim was able to stumble around the corner to get help.  The SUV fled the area, and hasn't been seen since.

Police shut the area down as crime scene investigators searched for evidence.  According to officers on the scene, the victim is expected to survive.

This is just the latest problem for people in the area.

On Tuesday, police say they were forced to shoot a teenager in a gang-related undercover drug operation at the elementary school just down the road.

In that case, officials said the shooting involved a marijuana drug deal between an undercover officer, informant and two teenage suspects.

One of the teens, 17-year-old Jaquaz Walker reportedly shot the informant in the shoulder after attempting to rob him.

That's when police say the undercover officer shot Walker in the head. Walker died at Carolinas Medical Center Tuesday night.

Neighbors in the area tell us they're worried this may be a sign an old adversary may be making a comeback.

Several years ago, the area was plagued with problems from a well-known gang called the Hidden Valley Kings.

The group was so prominent, they attracted the attention of the nationally syndicated television show "Gangland", who produced an hour long program on the gang's alleged crimes.

Charlotte police working with Federal agencies managed to get a hold of the problem by locking up many of the leaders of the gang, but many believe gang activity in on the rise.
