I-85 ramp to re-close after tractor trailer wreck, fire

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Emergency crews were on the scene of an accident where a tractor trailer overturned and caught on fire Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened around 1:45 p.m. on the ramp from I-85 southbound to I-77 southbound in north Charlotte. Troopers told WBTV it appeared that the truck was going too fast, and overturned.

During the crash, one of the truck's fuel tanks ruptured and caused the truck to catch fire, officials said.

WBTV's Sky 3 was over the scene where heavy smoke could be seen coming from the overturned truck as fire crews put out the flames.

The driver of the truck, who Troopers say is from Florida, suffered serious burns and was taken to Carolinas Medical Center.

The ramp didn't re-opened until around 1 a.m.

Officials say that the ramp will have to be closed again Wednesday at 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Thursday so crews can repair damage done during the incident.

Drivers will be re-routed onto I-77 north, which they can follow to the Sunset Road West (Exit 16B) to re-access I-77 South.
