"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
Our recent editorial on Duke Energy's management of the Catawba River and its lakes drew a number of comments, both pro and con:
Tom Davis of the Catawba River Group wrote:
"This is a ‘managed' flood to insure the basin is maintained at full capacity to generate electricity and allow Duke to make money….
Duke Power has 11 dams on the river with a synchronized computer system and their own weather department, yet they chose profit over safety…."
And from Matt Williams:
"Maybe when the real disaster hits and hundreds of innocent people are drowned in their homes…Duke will be forced to spend a little money protecting the property and its customers."
Ron Hawkins strongly disagreed with our stance:
"The editorial you just gave on Duke Power and flood water is one of the most uneducated reports I could imagine….(You) should not give superficial reports just to satisfy several people whose homes got flooded."
And "Zoom Kat" laid the blame on local homeowners:
"I think some of the property is in designated flood plains where people should know better than to build…. Also, is WBTV willing to walk its talk and accept legal responsibility for skipping the ‘red tape' to get people's power turned on?…Just curious."
Agree or disagree with us, we thank you all for your comments.
