CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Police and school officials are investigating a bus accident near Highland Creek Elementary School.

The incident was reported at 3:10 p.m. on the 5900 block of Shelley Avenue, an exit from a school parking lot into the road.

The bus driver has been issued a traffic citation. Police say she was taking a left onto Shelley Avenue when the bus ran off the side of the road.

A Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools spokeswoman says Bus No. 343 accidentally slid off the road into a ditch.

There were 28 students on board as it was leaving the school. Medics transported two students to CMC Main with minor injuries. School officials say the remaining students were picked up at the scene by their parents.

Police and CMS are investigating.

CMS tells WBTV school officials will conduct a standard investigation, including a drug and alcohol test for the driver.
