Baby socks with a message bring smiles

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

When Ellen Garner discovered she was pregnant with her third child, she expected to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby just as she had two times before. But soon after the birth of her son Cruz, she knew they would have a long journey of hospitals, doctors and operations.

"He was born with a congenital birth defect, and at the tender age of 12 weeks, he underwent his first major surgery," she explained.

He's had a total of three surgeries, and the first one is an experience she'll never forget.

"When the nurses came into the room they handed me a gown and they said he can keep his socks on, and I thought to myself, 'Oh my gosh he's in plain white, just corny little socks,' you know. Where was the memo for that," she said.

She was prepared by the second surgery, and knew there were other families in need of something to smile about while facing surgery. Garner founded Socks 4 Surgery and today little feet everywhere go into surgery warm and inspired.

"They're a message of inspiration, they bring light to a dim situation when there's not much to smile about." she explained.

The socks say things like, "My Cardiologist is Better Than Yours," and "Nurses Love Me."

"Some are funny, some are spiritual," she said.

Socks 4 Surgery has gone global and babies around the world wear Garner's socks.

"I've sent socks now to nine different countries, all over the United States and I get photos from everywhere," she said.

Garner's donates these socks, if you'd like to help or learn more about her organization visit their website.
